Alright Guys
Here is the tutorial for creating the terrain in Mudbox.
Don't forget I want to see your terrain in Mudbox and your model on Tuesday.
I decided that I am going to save exporting for the in class demo on
Tuesday with the introduction to Unreal.
I found out that I have a bad splitter or cable for my internet and it
is nearly impossible to do anything online including uploading video.
So, after a looong time, I have finally got the video up on my website... see?
It's not just you guys that have these crazy crises all the time..

Demo Update 2!! Please read.
Hooray! Finally found a work flow that is somewhat stable!!
Here is a high quality and improved tutorial for Mudbox tools and another tutorial on creating stamps for Mudbox that we will use for Terrain. In addition to finding photos you can use this wonderful site called shaded relief archive that will provide you with a lot of images that are perfect for terrain stamps.
Create your heightmap based on your concept, create your stamps and start playing with Mudbox to get the first part of your terrain done. This will be due on Tuesday plus I want to see that you already started working on your model. We don't want to spend the second half of the semester modeling like we did in the first half. Let's start having fun painting textures!
Even if you watched the first somewhat terrible tutorial, I would suggest that you look through the new Mudbox tutorial because you can actually see the brush strokes as they happen so you might pick something up you missed the first time.
PLEASE ask questions!! Let me know if you are having issues.
All videos can be found on my youtube channel.

I will be posting another demo or 2 tomorrow on importing the heightmap into Mudbox
and using the stamps to create the terrain you want.

Update on Demo
As you guys know, my computer really hates working in 3D programs while recording so I have tried to make the demo numerous times with little success. I finally found a recording program that keeps my quality without blue screening, although you'll see mudbox crash a couple of times in the video and I need to now compress it before uploading. To start off, I got one jittery video up (although the audio is stable) on Vimeo last night so you can at least get into Mudbox and fimilarize yourself with the tools until I get the better, compressed video up. The reason I prefer you to watch my video rather than other tutorial videos is I am trying to compress many ideas into the one tutorial so that you don't need to search in many places. Also, in the next 2 demos that I will be posting there is a very specific workflow that I would like you to follow and it will be imperative that you watch the demos I made. Now that I have a bit of a better recording program hopefully everything will be up and running by tonight because I want your heightmaps and stamps done and in Mudbox by Tuesday. We'll have class time on Tuesday to review and tweak, but you need something in there that represents your scene.
Here is the Vimeo video and I will post the YouTube ones once the compression is done. Feel free to further explore Mudbox after watching or at least listening to this.
Post any questions up on the blog or feel free to email me.

Rough concept sketches
I've made some rough sketches of what I'm going to be doing. I'll still be making a few more , but this is what I've got so far. The first one is a scene outside of a temple. The second one is a teleportation platform. Third one is an abandoned mech covered in vines.
Midterms and Updates
Hi Guys!
I posted your midterms grades and will be sending emails with individual feedback that is in addition to what we went over in class. Please email if you have any questions.
I will be putting together the demo video on creating heightmaps and working in Mudbox tomorrow and that should be up sometime tomorrow night/Thursday morning.
Now let's get that homework assignment up! There are only 3 posted so far.

Castle Concept
So I built this model in class last week. I'm still probably gonna add some details to the back portion but it's pretty much done.
I think I'm gonna try to do a wintery scene with it.
So texture wise I'm going to need
1. Rock (mountains)
2. Castle Texture (if that counts)
3. Ice (for the moat)
4. Mud (for under the, hopefully transparent ice)
5. Dirt (for the ground)
6. Lighter dirt (for dirt path)
7. Snow
8. Grass (possibly)
9. Grass covered snow (Possibly)
Also the above concpet is very, very basic I'm just not good at drawing interesting moutains, especially not for quick thumbnails o.O but once I get into mudbox with a little height map knowledge I should have something that looks good.
Cambodian Temple Concept
Textures:
1. ground1_dirt
2. ground2_fallen leaves
3. ground3_moss
4. ground4_plant life on ground
5. ground5_dirt with stones
6. temple walls
7. tree1_bark
8. tree2_bark with moss
9. tree3_bark with moisture
10. tree4_bark variation (chewed away wood)
11. leaves
12. rubble1_stone
13. rubble2_stone with moss
14. rubble3_stone with moisture
15. stone steps
16. grass
17. ground6_ground with roots
- matte painting of trees for background
concept 0..0
still deciding on the texture of the building...
it's probably goning to be wood as well...but I cant find th texture I'm looking for ~"~

Attic
I managed to get one screenshot before lightning killed my power and torched my tree outside, so... ehmmm...
I'll try and get my work back up to this point in class!
EDIT:
Here's some more.

Well this sucks
So as unlikely as it would seem my computer has failed now too. It did so in a different way than josh's though..... I turned the thing off so I could jump to windows side and it just decided that the hard drive was no longer necessary. The thing boots up but the display remains blank and the hard drive doesn't seem to be spinning...... I"m gonna try and talk to apple tonight and IT tomorrow and see what I have to do to get it up and running and to hopefully save all my stuff....
If I can't get stuff back I know what I posted earlier wasn't perfect, Josh told me you wanted me to bring down the spec on everything, but I guess it'll just have to do for my final turn in for the assignment....
Also tomorrow I can demonstrate how the computer failed if you want proof because I do understand that the two of us losing our projects in the same week could seem a little suspicious......

Updates
So I worked on some of those textures issues. I think I still need to push the lighting further, but sadly that'll have to take a back seat to the other mounds of homework set in front of me. I'm not saying that as an excuse to slack off but rather saying that I'll probably be finishing this up at 3 in the morning monday night because I've got some much stuff piled up for class monday not to mention the game project for sunday's meeting.
Please let me know the bad things that're still sticking out to you and I'll jump on them as soon as I can.
